Why Your Backflow Preventer Needs an Annual Test

Backflow prevention assemblies are mechanical devices with internal check valves, springs, and seals that wear over time. A device that passed last year can fail this year — and a failed assembly means contaminated water (pesticides, chemicals, bacteria, or sewage) can flow backward into the public drinking water supply through cross-connections on your property.

That’s why the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) mandates annual testing under Title 30 of the Texas Administrative Code §290.44(h). Your local water utility enforces this requirement. If your test is missed or your assembly fails and isn’t repaired and recertified, the utility can issue a notice of non-compliance — and ultimately shut off your water service.

What Happens During a Backflow Test

Scheduling

You call or submit a request online. We schedule at a time that works for your facility — including early mornings, evenings, or weekends for properties where a water shutoff during business hours isn't practical.

On-Site Testing

Our TCEQ-licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) arrives with a calibrated differential pressure gauge kit and tests each assembly per TCEQ procedures. Testing typically takes 15–30 minutes per assembly, depending on size and accessibility.

Pass/Fail Report

You get a detailed test report documenting each assembly's serial number, location, type, test readings, and pass/fail status. This is completed on TCEQ Form 20700 — the official Backflow Prevention Assembly Test and Maintenance Report.

Electronic Filing

We file the completed test report with your water utility electronically — usually the same day. No chasing paperwork, no missed deadlines on your end.

  • How often does my backflow preventer need to be tested?

    At least once per year, per TCEQ regulations (Title 30 TAC §290.44(h)). Some water utilities or specific hazard classifications may require more frequent testing. Your utility will notify you when your test is due, but it's your responsibility to schedule it.

  • How long does a backflow test take?

    Most individual assembly tests take 15–30 minutes. If you have multiple assemblies on a commercial property, we can usually test them all in a single visit. We'll give you a time estimate when you schedule.

  • What happens if my backflow assembly fails the test?

    We diagnose the failure on-site and, in most cases, repair and retest during the same visit. Common failures include worn check valve seats, fouled relief valves, or debris in the assembly.   • Who is required to have a backflow preventer?

    Any property with a connection that could allow non-potable water to flow back into the public water supply. This includes commercial buildings, irrigation systems, fire sprinkler lines, medical facilities, industrial process connections, and more. Your water utility determines the requirement based on the hazard level at your property.

  • Do I need to be present for the test?

    Someone needs to provide access to the assembly and, if necessary, be available to authorize a temporary water shutoff. For commercial properties, this is typically a facility manager or maintenance contact. For residential irrigation systems, we just need access to the device (usually located near the meter or in the valve box).

  • Can I test my own backflow assembly?

    No. Texas law requires testing to be performed by a TCEQ-licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT). Even if you're a plumber or the property owner, you cannot self-certify your own assembly unless you hold an active BPAT license.
